MARKETING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Entrepreneurship in journalism is becoming increasingly important. Today, in the new era of podcasting and talk radio production, entrepreneurship is a driving force in new publications being created. Programs like The Young Turks, The Daily Wire, Pod Save America, and Louder With Crowder would never have been created without young and upcoming journalists who wanted to innovate in the field.

I was lucky enough to walk into the footsteps of these entrepreneurs in my experience as Sports Editor at Bruin News Now as well as the leader of Bruin Sports Radio. In the summers prior to my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school, I sold advertisements for the journalism program of St. Joe. I realized that what I was selling was a real product to be bought by companies looking to get some marketing for themselves. This immediately put me into the entrepreneurs mindset as a fifteen year old.

Beside entrepreneurship, the marketing aspect of St. Joe journalism came in the advertisements. I never was given ads to play by the companies in which we sold to. It was my responsibility to write the ads for the radio as well as the video broadcast. This experience will no doubt help me as I make the transition to college and the real world.
