LEADERSHIP & TEAM BUILDING

In eighth grade, I was a shy kid who was interested in video games and football. When I found out about Bruin Sports Radio, I was interested, but I was afraid to put my voice out there. One day, the senior in charge of the team approached me and invited me with open arms to the team. While only being on the radio team a part of the time, I learned through him and the other members of the team how to be a leader.

This year was my second as "Voice of the Bruins" and leader of Bruin Sports Radio. For football broadcasts this year, the team was unfortunately understaffed. We had two broadcasters including myself and two cameramen. I would not call this a bad situation, however. I was lucky enough to have one of, if not, my best friend Jack Clements to be my color analyst for the entire season. We drove to every game together and we had a real chemistry on air for which audiences always commended us.

Broadcasting with Jack was not the best part of the season, however. All other members of the broadcast crew were no older than eighth graders themselves. I was given the opportunity to pay forward what was done for me when I was in their same situation. While I feel it to be almost impossible to outclass the seniors that led me, I can go to sleep at night knowing I did what I could to help them enjoy the season and the broadcasts as much as possible.

In being sports director at Bruin News Now, I also have been able to have leadership experiences, this time year round. Once again, over half of the class is eighth graders and only three people out of seventeen in the class have taken it before, not including myself.

With this, many of these students did not know the fundamental principles of journalism that we practice at Bruin News Now. Because of this, I was able to work with multiple young students who remind me almost exactly of myself. The opportunity to work with these people is one that I have very much enjoyed, and one I will take with me into my college years.
